In search of Medium’s finest…

It was one of my angry pieces about Brexit Britain.

I had, as usual, attacked the English working class as being profoundly stupid in letting their political overlords hoodwink them into voting against their interests.

Among the comments, was someone who gently remonstrated with me, which made it impossible for me to react as I normally would.

Now who was this individual?

Michelle Scorziello.

And there began my friendship with this extraordinarily and extravagantly gifted writer.

You must know that a huge part of the attraction of operating in this space is getting to read and learn from other players and the subject of this article has taught me so much about our craft.

It is no exaggeration to state that I wouldn’t have attempted to write satire without haven’t picked up a few cues from our protagonist.

And Michelle has been central to my evolution as a writer here.

Describing her as something of a polymath is no hyperbole: there aren’t too many here who can claim to have written compelling material about James Joyce, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, modern British history, Boston, cats with the same verve and brilliance.

But the algorithms have been acting a bit funny lately.

The wholesale changes to the platform (Tony Stubblebine, hope you are paying attention?) have made it incredibly difficult to read authors, who were readily accessible, previously.

To read Ms. Scorziello, you would have to go to her page to check if she’s got any new material.

And this was precisely what I did this morning.

And what I found were her articles from 2022 and didn’t hesitate for a nanosecond to read them.

Her supreme prose and unusual storytelling gifts are unlike any other and it is the reason why she has built up a devoted fan base in the last two years.

But I also did notice something interesting when I went to her page: that there’s been no new material since mid-September.

While a part of me would attribute Michelle’s absence to being busy with life, the other part is slightly concerned by the silence of one of the very best.

If you are reading this, Michelle, I hope that you are good and well. And we can’t wait to have you back on Medium. Your brilliance is a such a source of inspiration.

Thanks very much.
