And what does it tell us about the church and organized religion?

The brutal rape which came with western imperialism was as much to do with the vast resources available as it was to do with physical bodies.

While commercial entities handled the extraction of palm oil kernels, cocoa, cobalt, diamonds, the missionaries were playing their part in getting the natives to adopt Christianity and the English language.

But what isn’t talked about enough is the outrageous levels of abuse which took place at the hands of the Catholic and Anglican Priests across Africa and the wider world.

Ronald Hyam’s Empire and Sexuality was an extraordinarily broad exposition on how powerful individuals, within and without the establishment, took full advantage of their position of trust in molesting the young boys that they were meant to be educating and in some extreme cases, clergy were at the forefront of spreading venereal diseases.

If the prolific abuse of underaged children were restricted to the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, our arguments would have a different flavour, but the sad and tragic truth is that the abuse still carries on till this very day.
