Most of these books were authored by influential academics or policy makers with links to the highest levels of government on both sides of the Atlantic — The United States of America and The United Kingdom.

The unexpected implosion (believe me it was) of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics led to a feeling of triumphalism in Washington and Ivy League professors promptly took advantage and authored books which can only be described as dust-bin worthy.

Anyone who has read Francis Fukuyama’s End of History in which the author sought to use Marxist dialectic to explain the unassailable position of liberal democracy will clearly recognize the point being made here.

Fukuyama’s old mentor, not wanting to be left out of the party, wrote an equally irresponsible book — The Clash of Civilizations — which sought to widen and capitalize on the ideological divisions between the oriental and…
