And this is why Medium still prints buckets of money for specific genres.
Capitalism, in its current incarnation, in the twenty-first century is the biggest muthafucker of all. It is a winner takes all enterprise, which all but guarantees that only those at the top of the food chain dominate, while the rest of us fight for scraps, well for those lucky enough to get any scraps.
It is in essence, a zero sum game.
It is to all intents and purposes: primitive and atavistic, but it seems to work quite successfully and it is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down.
Medium, as it happens, reflects modern day capitalism, at its very finest. As with all things pecuniary, the numbers are all that counts; it is the numbers which drive everything; the salaries, the bonuses, the acquisitions, the competitions and the continued survival of this space.
Last week, I read a brilliant piece by Benjamin Sledge bemoaning the marked decline of Medium, citing the numbers of self-help and erotica posts which have come to dominate this space. The writer gave the example of the porn videos which made its way to the President’s phone, courtesy of some error from the system.
Breaking My Silence About Medium
How much I make, the history/problems with the platform, and realistic solutions
But what our man fails to understand is that, the notion of creating and sustaining a space such as ours is one that requires a huge amount of money and billions aren’t generated writing anodyne articles about the moon and stars. Funds are generated by writing what people want to read; sex, hot sex, and more sex and we shouldn’t also forget to add, self-help, money and topics that are bound to get people clicking and staying for as long as possible.
And this is why money making and self-help articles are dominating in a very big way.
