2024 has proven to be an extraordinary year in the history of humankind.

When future generations write about the tumultuous events which led to the third world war, they will point to several thing which took place over the course of 366 days in one calendar year.

Ukraine has ended the year with its position much more precarious than ever.

There were several commentators, myself included, who thought that Russia had overextended itself in invading its neighbour and that it was only a matter of time before it sued for peace.

But we failed to pay scant attention to Zelenskyy’s sugar daddy’s economic woes, underestimating the degree to which inflation had done a number on the greenback.

And we also failed to take heed of the fact that Russia had found novel ways to get round the punitive sanctions and get its product out to several countries around the globe.

But we were soon shaken out of our complacency, when the bear launched successful offensives and took more ground from the enemy territory in the last few months.

And this reality is exacerbated for millions of Ukrainians, with the decision of the American electorate to plumb for Donald Trump and a Republican…
