January is the most difficult month of the year.

And with good reason too.

It’s the anti-climatic feeling that comes with having gone through the Christmas festivities and emerging into the new year as impecunious as ever.

September runs January close, but there’s a huge difference: at least the ninth month of the year is still warm while January is bitterly cold and quite depressing.

I am not trying to absolve December from all of the seasonal difficulties, but there’s a warm feeling about the run up to Christmas. The lights, carols and TV programs do help in creating a unique buzz about the final month of the calendar year.

But January is a whole different kettle of fish.

It is bad enough that there are a hundred days in the first month of the year and this is seriously exacerbated by the knowledge that you will have to get by on nothing for the better part.

And if you are in the business of being creative, being broke is an absolute killer.

As opposed to spending your natural time reproducing yourself and coming out with brilliant topics to write about, you are busy worrying about how to cover all of your…
