The People’s Republic of China.

There’s no greater example of a country, which has arisen from the depths of economic stagnancy, occupation and humiliation at the hands of foreign powers to dominate global affairs.

The United Kingdom flooded this vast land with opium and when its leaders dared to pin back the barbarians with their poison, a war ensued which the natives lost and led to the invaders taking control of the area known as Hong Kong.

There was also Japan.

The land of the rising sun was incredibly militaristic back then, and it did colonize Manchuria, in the North West region of the country. The atrocities of the Japanese empire, which have been well documented, have been the source of tension between both nations in recent times.

And we cannot forget the internecine warfare too.

Students of history will know that the communists won the civil war against the nationalists to establish the People’s Republic of China, but even then, Mao Zedong had to look to Stalin’s Russia for funding and leadership and that came with its own sets of problems.

It was only when Chairman Mao died that his successor began to take steps which put China firmly on the course to being a global power.
