It was unlikely that the average soldier would ever see the fruits of the plunder — if he survived — but he really had little choice but to participate.

Yes and No.
When Britain went on punitive expeditions to other parts of the world, the conquering soldiers usually carted away valuable goods and resold them in their host country.
Britain is full of artefacts from Nepal, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Sudan and Nigeria.
