It’s the only option we have…

Great Britain is a nation rich in tradition.

Some of these traditions are useless, a few are quite fascinating and the rest are simply out of tune with our ever changing times.

Yesterday was one of such — the opening of both houses of parliament.

The tradition of the opening of parliament is a ceremony that is replete with pomp and pageantry; usually with Her Majesty donning the diamond encrusted crown and her long flowing robes as she strides to the throne to give a speech written for her by the Prime Minister.

However banal, populist or fascist the policies of the ruling party are, our constitutional monarch is expected to keep a straight face while announcing a raft of laws due to take effect in the coming year.

But this was a Queen’s speech with a difference.

For the very first time in sixty years (yes, she’s been head of state forever) Her Majesty was missing from the grand opening of the houses of parliament.

As such, it fell to her son to step in for the once indestructible monarch, while subtly acknowledging that his mother had yet to abdicate the throne.
